Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition affecting millions worldwide. It is characterised by persistent, unwanted, and intrusive thoughts, images, or impulses (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions). These obsessions and compulsions can significantly interfere with daily activities and cause distress, anxiety, and depression.

    Psychotherapy for OCD

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most common type of psychotherapy used to treat OCD. Specifically, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a form of CBT that has been shown to be highly effective in treating OCD. ERP involves exposing the person to situations that trigger their obsessions, and then helping them resist the urge to perform compulsive behaviours.

During ERP, the individual works with a therapist to develop a hierarchy of situations from least to most anxiety-provoking. For example, if someone has contamination obsessions, the hierarchy might start with touching a doorknob and gradually progress to handling dirty dishes or even intentionally getting their hands dirty and not washing them. The therapist helps the person confront each situation without giving into their compulsions, which allows them to learn that the feared outcome does not occur.

ERP can be challenging and anxiety-provoking at first, but with practice, many people experience significant improvements in their symptoms and quality of life. ERP can be done in individual or group therapy settings and typically lasts between 12 and 20 sessions.
